Bonjour

Today we got to visit our grade 4 learning buddies to see their Rube Goldberg machines and to practice some simple building.  Here is a neat example of a Rube Goldberg we got to watch with our buddies.

In French we practiced "les lieux" (places in the city) and "je vais" (I'm going/I will go). Pictured is a list of places in the city. Can your child tell you where they are going this weekend?

Bon weekend!

Bonjour

Please send a water bottle with your child to school daily! It minimizes the number of times they need to leave the classroom and ensures we are all staying hydrated!

At Teacher's Convention I attended a great workshop about Shaker dice. They are a lot of fun (and quite noisy haha) but we have been using them in the classroom to reinforce our mental math skills.

3 ideas to try tonight with the shaker pictured above:
1- go along the path and double die
2-what do you need to add to each die to get to 10?
3-can you add neighbouring dice? Can you add three dice in a row? Advanced: can you add the entire row? What strategies can you use to make this easier?

If you would like to come in on a Friday morning to learn some Math games to support your child at home, I'm planning a morning of centers. Please email me if you are interested. I'll send out a survey to parents with available dates.

In Science, each child used a picture of a animal to identify it as sauvage or domestique, as well as what it's body is covered in (des écailles, de la peau, des plumes de la fourrure). See yesterday's Blogger for the English translations. Ask your child about their animal.

Just a quick blogger today!

Students are coming home with a oi activity sheet in their blue folders. Please have them read their "oi" lists to you. Encourage them to cut longer words to sound them out.

Tomorrow is Pink Shirt Day and Scholastics orders are due.

Merci!

Bonjour!

Home reading this weekend.

Today students were treated to some addition centers led by our grade 4 learning buddies.

Here's a fun game for you to play at home this weekend.

Double, double

Using a set of ten frames https://www.helpingwithmath.com/printables/tables_charts/koa4-ten-frames01.htm#page10 show each frame to your child and ask them to double it.
Technically, students only have to double numbers to 5, but many are able to double to 10, and beyond. Ten frames are handy since you can really visualize the numbers. Ie, 9 in a ten frame has one blank space. If you double it, you can visualize a 10, double that and then take away the one blank space each time (ie, (9+9 is the same as 10+10=20-2)

Joyeuse fête de 100.

What a fun filled day we had. We celebrated in so many ways! Exercises and art and math and and and...!

I'm a big believer in the power of games to learn Math. I'm interested in hosting a Math morning one Friday morning and inviting parents to come and learn/play some Math games with room 2 students for an hour. If you are interested, please email me. I will then send out a survey with options for dates.

Merci!

Bonjour

I hope you all had a wonderful very long weekend!

This week's new sound is "oi." How many words can your child tell you that feature the sound oi? Can they blend oi with a variety of consonants?

I am sending home a Math game for you to play with your child called 12 Hearts. You need 2 dice and some sort of counters (buttons, cheerios etc).

Roll the dice. Add the sum. Cover the heart. Goal is to fill the entire grid. We played this morning. Observe your child while he/she is playing. Which strategies is he/she using to add the numbers? Do they know their facts to 5? Are they counting each pip (black circle) on the die? Counting on? Using doubles or near doubles? They only correction I will ask you to make is that when they add, they start with the LARGEST number and then count up instead of starting at one and counting both dice, as that isn't an efficient strategy. To get the 1, students will need to do a subtraction. Or, you can cover the 1 fill the rest of the board.

Today students participated in a number of fun Valentines and Carnaval centers. We had a visit from bonhomme Carnaval and had our croissant and hot chocolate snack. At the end of the day the entire school had a parade!

There should be two books coming home for home reading: Je t'aime and a classroom book.
Please ensure you are also practicing the high frequency words sent home every week (master list was sent by email last week).

A reminder there is no school until Tuesday. See you then!

Our new math strategy for the week is making 10. Today we did this using 10 frames and adding the number 9 to various other numbers. Here is a video that explains it well. Your support in practicing these Math strategies goes a long way!

Bonjour

This month's virtue is Empathy. Today we discussed that empathy is to think of the feelings of other people. Lately, some students have not been cleaning up after themselves, participating in activities or speaking kindly to their peers. Students were reminded that their most important job is to be kind, responsible citizens. Please chat with your child about what kindness, empathy and responsibility look like at school and what their "job" as a learner is.

I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at Thursday's Parent Literacy Night! Thank you for your support. You are still welcome to join! RSVP: https://forms.gle/DMCWSWccnzQJWNY46

On February 12, students are welcome to bring Valentine Cards to school if they choose.  If your child does choose to participate, please have them bring one for each student in their class.  Please do not send any candy, food or toys with the Valentines to school . Any food or candy that arrives at the school will not be sent home with other children.  Thank you for your understanding.  Valentines that have games/activities attached as part of their design will be permitted.

Important dates:
Thursday - Healthy Hunger lunch/Library day (please return books prior to Thursday)
Friday - Red, White and Blue clothing day
           - Choice and curiosity - Students are invited to bring a board game if they choose. Otherwise they will be provided.

A game for making 10

Today we learned a new game to practice adding together numbers that make 10 and you can play at home!

Go Fish Making 10 (Pige dans le lac)

You'll need a deck of cards (or half a deck to keep it manageable) with no face cards. Ace =1

Each player receives 5 cards. Instead of making pairs, you are grouping numbers cards that make 10. If you have a 3, when it is your turn you will ask the player to your left if they have a 7 etc. The first player with no remaining cards wins.

They had a great time playing this with 10 frames today.

Bonjour

This week we have a new sound of the week, it's CH. Here is a video with how to pronounce it and how to blend it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OwTXAY5uEc

If you haven't yet taken the time to go over your child's report card WITH your child, please do.

  1. On Friday, we will be having a mixed grade ‘Choice and Curiosity’ board games activity. Students will have the opportunity to play a board game with some new friends from different grades. If your child would like to bring a board game for this activity, they are certainly welcome to! If they do bring one, we want them to know that pieces could get lost or something may get broken. If this will be upsetting, it might be better that they do not bring a game to share. Games that are brought on Friday should be:
    • labelled with their name
    • short, easy to understand, and can be played in under 30 minutes
    • well known by your child so they can teach others how to play independently

Here we are practicing writing le son ch in the falling snow. When we engage several senses to practice our words of the week, we are creating multiple pathways to the brain which helps reinforce what we have learned. Try writing the sounds of the week in shaving cream, jello, play dough etc.
