Bonjour

Today we did a fun Science/Art project by mixing a primary or secondary colours with white and black. We then painted a picture with the different shades.

We read two beautiful pictures books for Orange Shirt Day: You Hold Me Up (Monique Gay Smith and Danielle Daniel) and When We Were Alone (David A Robertson and Julie Flett).

In Math we practiced subitizing, ordering numbers, greater/lesser than AND addition with dominoes.

Bonjour

Aujourd'hui was la course de Terry Fox. Our goal was 7 laps per student. How many laps did your child run? Merci pour your donations.

Today students will be bringing home some syllable practice for over the weekend. We have been practicing blending consonants with the letters A & E. You can keep these. The more practice the better :)

Monday is Orange Shirt Day.

Scholastics have been ordered and should arrive within 1-2 weeks.

Bon weekend!

Bonjour!

Tomorrow is our Terry Fox run. Students are bringing home a tattoo and a sticker in their pochette bleu today. If your child would like to run in someone's memory or for someone, please write the name in. Children are also welcome to Run for Terry.

A gentle final reminder to dress for the weather and to ensure that your child brings a change of clothes and extra socks (unless you have already sent them in).

We had a fun conclusion to our arc en ciel science project. If you'd like to recreate it at home, you'll need seven cups, food colouring, paper towel and water.

Cup 1 half full of rouge
cup 2 empty
cup 3 half full of bleu
cup 4 empty
cup 5 half full of jaune
cup 6 empty
cup 7 half full rouge
Arrange paper towel arcs touching the bottom of each cup and wait 24 hours!

Bonjour!

Today we worked on our reading stamina. How many minutes are we up to? Were you able to stay sitting and reading?

We also played the game of La Guerre (War) using plus grand que (greater than) and plus petit que (less than). Mes amis, teach your parents how to play the game! (You can play with or without the face cards... Typically we say that l'as (ace) is a 1,  le valet (jack) is a 10, la reine (queen) is 11 and le roi (the king) is 12.)

In Science we learned how to order colours from plus pâle (light) to plus foncé (darkest). Pick out some items in the house and have your child identify the colour in French and if it is pâle or foncé.

Important dates this week:

mercredi /Wednesday
Bibliotheque/Library day (please return your books on of before Wednesday)

jeudi/Thursday
Healthy Hunger lunch for those students that ordered one. Please remember to send a morning snack and water bottle!

vendredi/Friday
On Friday, I need to dress warmly for the weather for the Terry Fox Run (in layers and in safe outdoor shoes to run in rather than winter boots or rain boots).  If it is snowing or raining lightly, we are still running outside.  (If weather is unsafe, we will be inside.)  I also need to bring a pair of dry socks to change into afterwards.
Last day for Scholastics orders.

Today we learned a new song about les couleurs. We also illustrated the lyrics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2o_E5gg2Y0

We did 7 centers with the lettre E. Ask your child to show you the movement that goes with the sound e. What was your favourite center and why?

Please return the little Rouge book when you've had a chance to read it.

Terry Fox Run (rain or shine or snow!) Dress for the weather. Donations can be sent in with your child if you choose.
Last day for Scholastics orders.

Bonjour!

We have been working hard on our colour words this week and your child has his/her Rouge book to read you this weekend. If possible, please send it back to school when you are done with it.

We have also starting blending our first vowel (A!) with a consonant.
Ie:
ba
ab
la
al
fa
af

Letter and sound identification are fundamental early literacy skills. Noticing rhymes, that words are made up of letters and syllables and that sentences are made of words (all phonological awareness skills) are necessary for reading success.

We're excited for next week's Terry Fox and we are building stamina running and walking. We are also building stamina reading, we practiced the small book we made and the songs we have practiced. Sitting and reading independently (or looking at pictures and telling yourself a story - an emergent reading strategy) takes practice. We are at 3 minutes!

Just a reminder that Scholastics orders are due next Friday.

See you at interviews.

Bon weekend,

In Science we are beginning our study of colours.
(the learning outcomes can be found at http://www.learnalberta.ca/ProgramOfStudy.aspx?ProgramId=379983#984289 )

Today we learned about natural vs manufactured colours in science. (Objet naturel et manufacturé)
Ask your child what the difference is.

We also organized colours from le plus foncé (darkest) to the plus pâle). What kind of green objects did we sort?

I will see you all at interviews in the coming days.

A bientôt!

Bonjour

Today we got to do some fun letter A centers. We had 8 different ways of practicing the letter a. Ask me about my favourite. We use many modes of practicing the letters and use different textures in order to really build connections in brain.

We read about 10 easy ways to make someone's day to practice the virtue of politeness and good manners.
Can you name 3?

A bientôt!

Today we learned a new song called "Dans ma salle de classe." This is a fun song about the objects in a classroom and a scary teacher. Practicing these songs at home help reinforce French vocabulary as well as early reading skills. In the coming weeks, I will send a duotang home with some of our songs and this will be the beginning of our home reading program.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0WY5mzUJQ8

We also played Math baseball (as you may remember from earlier in the month) but this time we played with 2 dice. We play dice games to practice subitizing. This games also helps practice number formation as well as counting French.
Try playing Math Baseball at home this week, your child can teach you.
When throwing 2 dice, please watch your child and encourage them to count on. Start with the biggest number (ideally they can subitize it and not count it) and then count on on the second die. This is a more efficient strategy until they can add them with mental math.

A bientôt!

Bonjour

Wonderful seeing so many of you this morning.

Today we did some problem solving about birthday cakes as a student is celebrating her birthday this weekend. We explored the way we could arrange 6 candles on two cakes. Have your child explain the problem at home and which solutions they came up with. The beauty of problem solving is that they often allow for multiple correct answers.

We read "Merci M. Panda?" What was the message of the story and how does it relate to the virtue of the month?

Bon weekend!

Bonjour!

Aujourd'hui (today) we learned about mixing les couleurs primaires in Science using modeling clay.

Rouge + bleu =?

Bleu + jaune = ?

Jaune + rouge =?

We played one of the "most difficult games in the world".... the group counting to 10 game. Ask your child how to play and try playing it as a family.

Thank you so much for sending your magazines in, they'll be helpful next week.

See you at the fall welcome demain. Notre couleur c'est bleu!

We are learning a new song called "sac à dos"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdo69O2B2c4
We sing to acquire new vocabulary and have it stick. Following along with the lyrics on the screen helps build word recognition skills.

Friday morning is our Fall Welcome. Looking forward to seeing many of you then. Our grade colour is blue.

Bonjour,

What did we learn today at school?

In Science we are starting to learn about colours. Ask me what colour we started with.

In Math we tried different ways of counting the members of our class. It was a bit tricky. Ask me what I learned about making counting easier. How did we succeed?

To practice our virtue of the month, politeness, we read a book about saying please and thank you. I will tell you how we say these in French.

AMA! (Ask me about)

Bonjour!

Thank you for taking the time to check our Blogger. Please review the posts from this week as there is some information to share and a game for your child to teach you.

This week we have been working on letter formation and identification (in French), classroom vocabulary/routine phrases and counting to 10.

Some things to ask your child about:
-What was your favourite moment from this week?
-Have you been trying to speak French when you know the words?
-What do you like best about grade 1?
-Have you made a new friend?
-Is there anything you need help with?

What can we do at home? (This is a question I receive frequently, so I thought I'd make a few suggestions...)
-printing his/her name with only the first letter being capitalized
-practicing printing letters and words (in English or French)
-read to your child
-play our weekly Math game (if applicable)

Merci! Bon weekend!

Bonjour!

Today we practiced our numbers from 1-10 in French. We played Math Baseball as a group and in teams. Tonight, your child will teach you how to play!

(If he/she forgot, two players each have a strip of paper on which is written 1 2 3 4 5 6. Each player rolls 1 die. You put an X "strike" above the number. 3 strikes above one number? You're out and the other player wins.)

What do students learn playing this game?
-numbers to 6 in French
-how to subitize (recognize dots patterns at a glance)
-taking turns

A bientôt!

9 Helpful phrases to get your child to talk about the first day of school

Bonjour!

We had a great first day of school. Of course the first day is full of nervousness, we read a book called "First Day Jitters" that had a surprise ending - ask your child! Hopefully everyone will feel increasingly comfortable as the week goes on.

We will be practicing routines and expectations this week as well as beginning our work around numbers to 12 and letters of the alphabet.
I sent paper bags home with each student today for the Paper Bag presentations. I did mine today. The objects in my bag included a family picture, the miniature version of my favourite animal, my favourite book and an item in my favourite colour. Please feel free to send them in whenever they are ready.

Here's a link with great questions to ask your child about their day at school:
