le 29 novembre

Bonjour

Today we built a checklist for revising our writing. We came up with the criteria of: a sentence starts with a capital, has finger spaces and ends with a period. We used highlighters to make sure all the elements were there. Students wrote "Voici mon chapeau fou."

We are working on a winter art project. We tried a new art technique of adding salt to water paint and observed the crystalizing effect it had.

Some weekend reading for parents - totally optional :)

Importance of rhyming skill: https://www.scholastic.com/parents/books-and-reading/raise-a-reader-blog/3-best-rhyme-games-kids.html

Why tracking print and making one to one correspondence is important (no need to read the entire link (it's a teacher who sells resources, not a promotion but her explanation is good) you can read just up to the first picture- it is in English despite the title being in French.

Bonjour!

Today we had a visit from Constable Mark. He discussed his work as a police officer, answered questions and read the students a book about being a bucket filler. Bucket filling will be the virtue of the month in December.

We also put cut up sentences in order based on them 1) making sense 2) starting with a capital and 3) ending with a period.

Tomorrow is crazy hat day.

Bonjour

What a fun Pajama day we had!

Here are a few songs we are working on:
Lundi matin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noo1_wUGsIU
Bonjour Monsieur https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ5zj3YQ0Tg

The Social Studies presentations are coming along really well. We are using those sentences to look for capitals letters and punctuation. Students are learning that sentences and names (proper nouns) take capitals and periods.

In Math we are learning to order numbers from least to greatest (ordre croissant) and greatest to least (ordre décroissant).

Home reading is coming home today. Please remind your reader to track the words with his/her finger and to sound out unknown words with their Raconte-moi l'alphabet sounds or actions.

Merci!

Crazy Hat day Friday.

Support and Compliment: Home Reading

le 25 novembre

Bonjour,

Wednesday is Pajama Day (only for room 2)

Friday is Crazy Hat Day (for all students)

Thank you for sending in your community projects. Today we made a list of how many communities are represented in our classroom -11!) and the first couple of students presented. Please send in your project if it didn't make it in today. Merci!

I will be away tomorrow. Mme Zdrill will be covering for me.

Home Reading begins today. Your child will bring home a book. Three strategies I'd like to see them using:
1) track with their finger (touching each word as they go)
2) reread the book (at least twice)
3) try to sound out any unknown words
-Please return your book Wednesday. Merci!
(At this time we won't do a formal recording sheet. Enjoy some family time as you read. We do the heavy lifting in terms of reading at school.) I will do a separate post about encouraging readers.

FOOD BANK DONATIONS NEEDED
We are collecting non-perishable food items for the Mayor's Food Bank Drive until December 19. Items can include:  Pasta sauce, granola bars, juice boxes, powdered milk, stage three baby food, peanut butter, pasta, rice, soup cans or packages, cereal, oatmeal, canned tuna, canned chicken, canned beans, canned fruit, pancake/bread/biscuit mixes, gluten-free pasta, etc.  Thank you for your support!

I mentioned to a few families that the Calgary Reads Children's Reading House is an absolute gem to visit. It's free, you bring a book (new or used in great condition) and you get to leave with a book. To get more info or book a visit, go to:

Bonjour

Today’s letter is X!

In Math we highlighted even numbers on a 100 grid. What kind of patterns emerged? Ask your child what they noticed.

In French we looked at our words of the week. I introduced the concept of there being two types of words: sight words (words that you learn to recognize at sight they may or may not be words that can be sounded out.  Les, des, elle for example, words like deux that have a silent end letter) and decode-able words (words that are easily sounded out: cat, je, banane...). I have put up a board across the hallway from our room entitled “how do we learn to read?” Please have a look. I will also attach the content of the board to an email going to families tomorrow.

We did a self evaluation about citizenship and student came up with a goal. These will be shared at conferences.

Library tomorrow.

See you Thursday!

Please visit last Friday’s blogger post with Math games if you missed it. Merci!

Bonjour

Today's letter is W.

In Math, students had the challenge of PROVING if a number was even or odd. Give your child a number between 10-20. Ask if it's even or odd. They can explain it to you or draw it out. The goal is for their work to speak for itself (ie - the child doesn't have to ask if it's correct. Their work should show it.)

Conferences - it is up to you if you would like your child to attend conferences with you - either works with me!

Please see our new words of the week, below.

Important dates:
Wed - Library
Thursday- no school, I'll see you at conferences!
Friday - no school for students - PD day.

Bonjour

Today we worked on ordering numbers and identifying them out of order. This is still a bit tricky, so we count manipulatives, order number tiles, represent numbers in many ways (tallies, ten frames, dots....) and play games like Boum, Fill the Cup and Number Path games. This is a great area of practice for home. Tell your child to show you a number with some sort of manipulative and then ask what happens if you add 1, take away 1, add 2 etc. Do they need to recount each time or can they add on/take away and remember what number they had?

Boum: Write the numbers from 1-20 on slips of paper. Include 4-5 slips that say Boum. Put them in a bag, drawn them at random. Say the number and keep your slip of paper. Continue on to the next player. If you pick the Boum card you have to put all of your slips of paper back in the bag. The player with the most cards win.

Fill the cup: Each player has an empty cup (a small cup that holds about 20-30 of an object). Players take turns rolling a die and adding that number of cubes/legos/cheerios/beads/rocks etc into their cup. The first to fill the cup wins. Count how many objects you have.

Number path games (you can google blank "follow the path templates" to get a whole variety for free). Fill in the blank squares with numbers, get a die and some playing pieces and play the game. The objective is to get to the end while identifying the numbers you land on.

I have many digital copies of these games, if you email me I am VERY happy to share them with you and your family.

Mme Zdrill will be available for conferences from 8am-1pm if you'd like to speak with her. Mr Trevor will also be present.

The school is beginning to collect for the Food Bank. Boxes are currently in the hallway by the entrance if you would like to participate in our food drive.

Bon weekend!

Next week:
-Library Wednesday
-Conferences all day Thursday (no school for students)
-No school Friday

Bonjour

Today we began one of my all time favourite Math activities: Willie the Wiggle Worm. You can watch the video here to get a better understanding of the activity, I do not share the video with students after the 4 minute mark. Please don't print any of the sheets off at home as we will be working through them all week and possibly into next.
https://mathpickle.com/project/willie-wiggle-wiggle-worm/

It is quite challenging and moves on in terms of difficulty while allowing students who need the extra practice at the beginning level to have it. It is teaching students grit, flexibility and resiliency in problem solving. It also reinforces numbers to 25 and their correct printing ie we still see reversals (ie 31 for 13) and students starting their numbers at the bottom instead of top as common errors.

Today's letter was T.

These are our new words of the week. Please practice reading and writing them.

Bonjour

Our letter today was S.

We attended an assembly and played a syllable game with our grade 4 learning buddies.

Students have a bit of work to do over the weekend. I'll be sending home a project we started (with our buddies!) all about themselves. In Social Studies we are starting to learn about the groups we belong to. On the sheet, it asks for students to illustrate a group they belong to. I'm hoping they can brainstorm with you which groups they are members of and if there is a symbol that represents that group. If you could please return them on Tuesday that would be great. Merci!

We had a conversation about touching others. We do have permission to touch other people. We need to ask if we can touch give hugs etc. Things were a bit rough in general (school wide) outside (soccer etc) and Mme Brinson asked all teachers to speak with their students about this.

Students made a beautiful coquelicot project with Mme Emily.

Bonjour,

We are working hard on our numbers from 11-20. These are proving a bit tricky. If students can practice their numbers in French in and out of sequence, that would be most helpful. Some students will be bringing home their number booklet again tonight.

We are working on emotion words. Ask your child how they are feeling. They should reply with "Je suis..."

Our letter and sound today is P.

Important Dates
Thursday: Bibliotheque (please return books) and special lunch
Friday: Remembrance Day assembly. Any sparks, brownies, beavers etc are welcome to wear their uniform. If you have any veterans in your family, they are more than welcome to attend.

Merci!

Bonjour

I hope you all had a great long weekend!

Today we learned the letter n sound. Have your child tell you the story, show you the action and do the sound.

We are starting our words of the week. Each week, there will be 3 words to practice reading and writing at home.
Finally, there about 6 students that have a little work to finish at home. Please check your child's folder, it looks like this.
